Work on the palliative information and supportive care centre at the James Paget University Hospital is now underway and it’s all thanks to the generosity of local people.

Everyone is invited to come and meet with us to hear more about the services which will be found in the centre and as outreach services.

You can find out more at the Victoria Hotel, Lowestoft, on Thursday 19th April 6-8pm.

Training will be given. 
Please come and meet with us and hear from local organisations about volunteering with them.

These events are open to everyone and light refreshments will be available.

 Palliative care supports patients and families whose lives are affected by illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, renal failure, severe lung disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and other life threatening diseases.

Digging in the rain for new Palliative Care East centre

Singer Charlotte Bullen, 20, was digging in the rain to cut the first turf for the new £1.5m Palliative Care East Centre being built at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston.

The centre will offer information and supportive care, complementary therapies, psychological and spiritual support and advice on social care and financial matters to people with life-limiting illnesses.

Charlotte, from Belton, helped raise money for the centre by recording and selling CDs.

Dr Jane Scott, GP for lead for palliative care in Great Yarmouth and Waveney, said: “It is vital that people who are given the diagnosis of a potentially life-limiting illness have access to information and supportive care that helps them live their lives as fully as possible. This centre will be a vital hub for patients and their families and will also support a range of services in the community as well”.

Peter Franzen, interim chairman of the James Paget University Hospital, said: “We are indebted to all our donors’ generosity and the new service will play an important role in many people’s lives over the years to come. We are looking forward to working with all our partners to help provide a wide range of information and support services in a centre that will be fit for the 21st century.”

The resource centre and outreach service is a partnership between the James Paget, NHS Norfolk and Waveney, HealthEast, local county councils and the voluntary sector.

The service will offer patients and carers a one-stop-shop service for information and supportive services. The centre will not have beds but will offer a “home from home” environment offering; access to specialist palliative care support and advice, counselling, bereavement services, complementary therapies, welfare advice, and information about life-limiting illnesses.

Suggestions for names?

We would like to ask people to suggest names for the Palliative Care East centre. We are looking for a name that will help sum about what the centre is about and will be easy to remember. 

Suggestions to date have included Palliative Care East Centre, The Ark, The Haven, The Butterfly Centre, and The Sanctuary. But what name do you think the centre should have?

Contractor appointed and work underway

Suffolk-based ISG has been appointed to build the £1.5 million Palliative Care East information and supportive care centre at the James Paget University Hospital.


ISG started preliminary work on site today with the building due to be completed in December 2012.


The Palliative Care East (PCE) appeal was launched in 2006 and the aim of the appeal is to provide Great Yarmouth and Waveney with a stunning information centre that will help people with incurable illnesses such as cancer, respiratory, neurological, and cardiac diseases.


The new centre will host a range of information and supportive care services provided by a wide range of organisations working in partnership: from the NHS, to local cancer charities, patient support groups, and bereavement groups. The centre will not provide palliative care beds.


The centre will be about living life. Many people need help to live as full a life as possible when they have an incurable condition. The Palliative Care East centre will provide them with access to advice and support and will also signpost them to appropriate community services.


Interim chairman of the James Paget University Hospital, Peter Franzen, said: “We’re delighted that ISG are starting work and this marks an exciting time for the appeal. Local people have been so very generous and it’s great to see that generosity and hard work paying dividends now.


This centre will make such a difference, not only to patients with incurable diseases but also to their friends and families. Having access to information, help and support from the local NHS and local charities will help thousands of local people”.


ISG’s Bernard Clarke, managing director – South East, added: “The start of this project today is an extremely important moment for everyone involved in this impressive fundraising effort. As a purpose-built resource to focus patient support and advice, the new centre will undoubtedly become an invaluable regional healthcare asset.”

The new centre is a standalone building being built on a greenfield site at the northern end of the James Paget University Hospital site. The architects are Norwich-based LSI Architects. The new information and supportive care centre at the James Paget University Hospital is expected to open by Christmas 2012.  It is estimated 10,000 people a year will use the centre.
